Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge

  • Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge (map)

WHAT WILL WE SEE?

It’s springtime – expecting to see baby bison, prairie dogs and who knows what else!

Our guide for the September 2024 bus tour of the Refuge tells us that, pending seasonal rainfall, we should also see fields of wildflowers! (Historically they have even had wildflower tours there.)

BUS TOUR:

Working on it but won’t know for a while.

COST:

There is no cost to visit the Refuge.

GROUP DINNER:

T/B/D but early in the evening so we can take advantage of the sunset. (Sunset is approximately 8:13-8:14 p.m. according to TPE).

LODGING:

Search areas like Medicine Park, Cache, Lawton, etc. Making reservations now is recommended.

In September 2024, several of our participants stayed at The Lazy Buffalo Cabins in Cache, OK – about 3 miles from the entrance to the Refuge. Rates are in the $110 range. While their title indicates separate “cabins”, they are actually individual rooms connected to each other. Call them directly (to avoid the service charges added by the online booking services) and tell them you are part of the Heard Nature Photographers group with Jackie Ranney. 580/678-2577 www.lazybuffalocabins.com This lodging option is certainly not required.

SUGGESTED EQUIPMENT:

  • Bottled water (preferably not a disposable bottle).
