Pelican Point at White Rock Lake is a great place to have a field trip. Join us on July 15. I’ll be there by 7:00 PM, and the park doesn’t close until 10:00 PM. Basically, you follow East Lawther Drive until it is blocked off. There’s parking right there, and more parking across the road and up the hill. Also restrooms there.
The other day when I was there, there were lots of mallard hens and a few drakes, and one heron. But birds come and go, who knows what will be there next week?
I suggest bringing a chair while you’re waiting for the sunset. It doesn’t look like we’ll have any clouds Saturday, but weather is always unpredictable a week in advance. The viewing area is fairly limited, maybe 30 feet long by five feet deep, so it might be crowded. There’s no place to sit or lean so bringing a chair or support would be a good idea. I’d take minimal camera equipment, no flash needed for example. The path is wheelchair accessible, so it is easy to get there and back.
