The Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge (FWNC&R) is a natural area comprised of forests, prairies, and wetlands allowing you to step back in time and experience what the Fort Worth/Dallas Metroplex was like in the early 20th century. At its current state, the FWNC&R covers 3,621 acres and includes over 20 miles of hiking trails, making the park one of the largest city-owned nature centers in the United States. In 1980 it was designated as a National Natural Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior.

INTERESTING TIDBITS:
Alligators – I have been advised that the alligators may be sunning on the banks of the water to get warm. Since we will be there in the colder weather, we may or may not see them.
Prairie Dogs – in 2014, a waterborne illness killed the prairie dog community at the Refuge. They are now described as “extinct” at the Refuge. (The trail map showing a prairie dog area has not been updated in many years).
The bison are in a fenced area. They do not roam freely at the refuge.
Trail map of the Refuge: https://www.fwnaturecenter.org/trails/ Good information about each trail is on the trail map.
Note that there can be a lot of walking involved in this location but driving from some of the photo areas to other photo areas is also possible.
SUGGESTED EQUIPMENT:
Tripod/monopod
Bottled water.
A selection of lenses.
Bug spray – just in case.
Water/snacks
Hiking shoes are suggested, especially for those who choose to take the higher trails.
